From the past history of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the modern dog draws its character of indomitable courage, high intelligence, and tenacity. This coupled with its affection for its friends, and children in particular, its off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability, makes it a foremost all-purpose dog. (1948 KC Breed Standard)

The Edgeworth affix was taken from the name of my uncles bitch Edgeworth Bess.

My family have a long history of keeping Bulldogs, my great grandfather having owned old fashioned type Bulldogs back in the 1920’s, which he kept in his coal yard in London’s East End. I never knew these, but stories concerning them were fondly remembered by my father, whose job as a youngster, was to help tend the horses that pulled the coal carts.

From this background the Staffordshire Bull Terrier became the obvious breed of choice, kept by my family since the early 1950’s. I have personally owned Staffords since 1967, my first being ‘Bess’, shown below, bred by my late uncle Mr. Terence Knowles, who was my mentor and friend.

Welcome to the site, which will be updated with new topics from time to time. Some articles will be edited occasionally with new material to add interest or if I need to make a further point. There is often something that comes to mind, a memory, a quote or a correction.

I have completed and updated the Early Breeds history article, although there is always something that can be added to this. It includes links to other Bull Terrier breeds and more authentic old pictures. It is a vast subject, which could fill a large encyclopaedia. There are more historical examples of the breed which will be added. I also regularly update my Introduction if there is something of current interest.

I would remind readers that just because something is written or published in a book or database does not necessarily make it the truth or correct. The internet is also full of false information.

However, my name is on this site so I can guarantee my honest opinion and will endeavour to keep its contents accurate.

Phil Knowles,
Edgeworth Stafford’s
