HISTORICAL BITCH FAMILIES
Apart from the 6 foundation Male Lines, Mr. H.N. Beilby also researched and recorded 60 Bitch Families going back to circa 1920-1930’s, which he numbered.
Often the males in a pedigree are given more recognition, but many enthusiasts feel that the females are of equal importance. It is often said and very true that you start with the bitch and some breeders preferred to follow the ‘Family’ line, especially if they owned or liked a particularly good female.
Unfortunately, very early records of the female tap roots, going back before the 1920’s are unavailable, because pedigrees were handed down through word of mouth or hand-written and were probably lost in the course of time.
However, Mr. Beilby was able to research many of the bitch Families, from breeders and enthusiasts from the 1920-1930’s, who knew their stocks breeding. The Family numbered charts were published and updated at first in ‘The Stafford’ magazine.
These early bitches played a major role in producing some of the leading dogs of the breed and are a significant part of the breed’s heritage. The following are sample charts of Families 1 to 4 with some breeding details and pictures of the more well-known Staffords.
The ‘Family’ are the bitches line of descent i.e., the dam’s, dam, dam and so on.
